The other day I read a letter to the editor in a magazine, where the writer, a high-school teacher, mentioned that one typical assignment she gave her class was to analyze the lyrics of Gwen Stefani.

Is this what American students are reduced to these days, instead of reading Milton?

Comments:
Milton was English, after all. But Gwen Stefani over Raymond Carver???

Wait, so you're saying Americans can be excused from reading Milton because he isn't American?

Hey, in Mexico, we still are made to read Cervantes and El Cantar de Mio Cid.

Americans speak English, after all, you know. {shrug}

Either way, a sad state of affairs, this Gwen Stefani business, I'd say. {shrug}
